• Myocardial infarction in the rat-model is generated by ligation of the left coronary artery.
• Ligation at its mid-segment elicits medium-sized necrosis, whereas more proximal sites result in larger area.
• Instead of ligation, a snare is used in protocols involving reperfusion.
The rat-model of myocardial infarction is useful in the study of ischemia-induced ventricular arrhythmias. It is also widely used in the investigation of treatments ameliorating post-MI LV remodeling.
